ISTP – Making practical decisions internally, all while having fun

16-part series by Catherine Rains, M.S., CPP Professional Services Solutions Consultant, with some great tips on Type and Careers.  As we continue this blog series for the next few weeks and continue to post on each type preference, you can check back here to find them all in one central place.

ISTP – Making practical decisions internally, all while having fun

Driven by Introverted Thinking, ISTP preferences will thoroughly think through most decisions, and might surprise those they work with when they present their conclusions as a done deal, no discussion or input needed.  Supported by Extroverted Sensing, they are very aware of and present in their environment, seeking careers that involve using their five senses in a here and now manner. With ST working together, this type is focused on the bottom line and accuracy, and thus usually chooses careers that involve data, specifics, math, science, efficient systems.  They are often attracted to solving practical problems that produce a tangible result.  Also of interest with this type is the SP combination, making them seek out fun and possibly thrilling type careers and/or hobbies. SP also motivates them to see out careers that give them the opportunity to react quickly and accurately within their environment, like a fire fighter.  Careers identified as attractive to this type by those that filled out my survey include: Police Officer, Leadership, Horticulturist, Industrial Psychologist, Secret Service, Science Teacher, Forester, Rancher, and Mechanical Engineering.

Call to those of you who prefer ISTP – what other careers have you been attracted to?  The more we add to this list the better and feel free to repeat what is already listed above.  We’re looking for the most comprehensive list possible so that other types fully understand what careers feel most natural to those of you who prefer ISTP.
