Adding Sensing and Intuition to the learning mix

Once students have done their best to identify a faculty member’s preference for Extraversion or Introversion, the next step is to do the same thing with Sensing and Intuition. In a workshop/classroom setting, I separate the students into S and N preference groups. Then I ask each group to identify as many characteristics as possible that would indicate that the faculty member teaching them shares their preference for S or N. Since this one might not be so obvious, I give them the following prompters to get them started:

  • How would a faculty member with your preference for Sensing or Intuition teach a class?
  • What would the syllabus look like? Would the teacher follow it?
  • What would be the teacher’s primary focus –
    • Details/data/specifics, or
    • Theory/ideas/big picture?
  • What kind of tests is the teacher likely to give you?
  • How will you be evaluated?

The following are common responses I’ve heard from students who prefer Sensing.

Faculty members with a preference for Sensing:

  • Teach in a sequential, literal way, providing concrete, practical examples of what is being taught
  • Will demonstrate with real-life examples how the topic has been used in the past or is being applied in the present
  • May speak in a staccato rhythm, almost like they are talking in bullet points
  • Usually provide – and follow closely – a very specific syllabus outlining what will be taught during each class period
  • Typically focus on teaching details, data, and specifics related to the topic rather than interpreting the long-term implications of the details
  • Give multiple-choice tests with clear right and wrong answers, or use another testing format that allows for cut-and-dried answers
  • Typically evaluate students based on how well they memorized the specifics that were taught during the class
